How I Finally Cracked the Code on Three.js + Sanity CMS Integration


## The Local Images Problem

A month ago, my Next.js portfolio was like most others: loading images from `/public/images`. The result?

- The repo weighed **37MB** (committing images? Total junior move, but we've all done it).
- Build times were slow.
- Mobile users saw a slow, unoptimized site.

I wanted to fix this at the root, scale without fear, and have a site worthy of 2025. The solution: **migrate everything to Cloudinary**.

## Why Cloudinary? (And Not Another CDN)

### The Downside of Local Images:

- Every commit gets heavier.
- No automatic compression or modern formats.
- Not scalable if your site or image count grows.
- If you have multiple environments (dev, preview, prod), you can forget about image sync.

### REAL Advantages of Cloudinary:

- **Global CDN:** Images are delivered from a server close to the user.
- **Automatic optimization:** Serves WebP, AVIF, and compresses by default.
- **Dynamic transformations:** Resize, crop, blur, all on the fly.
- **Centralized dashboard:** No more searching through endless folders.

## Step by Step: How I Migrated Everything

### 1. Initial Setup

First, the dependencies:

I used Cloudinary's API and dashboard to keep the structure:

**TIP:** Upload everything by folder, so paths never change and the code doesn't break.

## Challenges and How I Solved Them

### SSR + Environment Variables

The `CldImage` component gave errors at build because it tried to access server-only environment variables. **Solution:** I always render from the client using direct URLs.

### priority vs loading in Next.js

If you set `priority={true}` and `loading="lazy"` together, Next.js throws an error. Solved it with:

### Bulletproof Fallbacks

If Cloudinary fails, the local image should always show. I implemented automatic fallback:

- **Repo:** From 37MB to **120KB** (!).

- **Single centralized component** for all images.
- **Consistent path structure:** If the path changes, I only change it in one place.
- **priority only for above-the-fold images, loading="lazy" for the rest.**
- **Monitoring:** Lighthouse before and after to see real impact.

## Is Migration Worth It?

If you're still loading local images, you'll regret it sooner or later. **Migration takes one day and you see instant benefits.** Less bandwidth, fewer build issues, more speed, and your site feels way more pro.

1. **Plan your image structure before uploading anything.**
2. **Implement fallbacks** so UX never breaks if Cloudinary doesn't respond.
3. **Centralize image handling in a single component.**
4. **Always monitor performance after every change.**
5. **Never upload local images to the repo again. Seriously.**

### Lo malo de las imágenes locales:

### 1. Setup Inicial

Primero, las dependencias:

Creé un componente que genera el `src` de Cloudinary automáticamente, hace fallback a la imagen local si falla y usa la optimización de Next.js:

### 3. Subida Masiva de Imágenes

Usé la API y el dashboard de Cloudinary para mantener la estructura:

**TIP:** Subí todo por carpeta, así los paths nunca cambian y el código no se rompe.

## Problemas y Cómo los Resolví

### SSR + Variables de Entorno

El componente `CldImage` me tiraba error en build porque quería acceder a variables de entorno privadas del server. **Solución:** renderizo siempre del lado del cliente usando URLs directas.

### priority vs loading en Next.js

Si ponés `priority={true}` y `loading="lazy"` juntos, Next.js te grita. Lo solucioné así:

### Fallbacks que SIEMPRE Funcionan

Quería que si Cloudinary explota, la imagen local se muestre igual. Hice fallback automático:

## Los Números No Mienten

Después de la migración:

- **Repo:** De 37MB a **120KB** (!).
- **First Contentful Paint:** 60% más rápido en mobile.
- **SEO:** Core Web Vitals mucho mejores.
- **DX:** Agrego imágenes con drag & drop desde el dashboard de Cloudinary.

## Buenas Prácticas Que Implementé

- **Un solo componente centralizado** para todas las imágenes.
- **Estructura de paths consistente:** Si el path cambia, lo cambio en un solo lugar.
- **priority solo para imágenes above-the-fold, loading="lazy" para el resto.**
- **Monitoreo**: Lighthouse antes y después para ver el real impacto.

## ¿Vale la Pena Migrar?

Si sigues cargando imágenes locales, tarde o temprano vas a sufrir. **La migración lleva 1 día y el beneficio se nota instantáneo.** Es menos ancho de banda, menos problemas de build, más velocidad y tu web se siente mucho más pro.

## Mis Recomendaciones:

1. **Define tu estructura de imágenes antes de subir nada.**
2. **Implementa fallbacks** para no romper UX si Cloudinary no responde.
3. **Centraliza el manejo de imágenes en un solo componente.**
4. **Monitorea siempre el rendimiento después de cualquier cambio.**
5. **No subas nunca más imágenes locales al repo. En serio.**

Después de años usando WordPress, Ghost y Next.js para mis blogs, finalmente encontré mi stack perfecto: **Astro**.

## Cómo Empezó Todo

Mi historia con la tecnología comenzó cuando era niño, sentado frente a mi primera computadora y dándome cuenta de que podía hacer mucho más que solo consumir contenido — podía **crear**.

Comencé experimentando con software, viendo cómo funcionaba, y escribiendo mis primeras líneas de código. En ese entonces, no lo veía como una carrera — solo tenía curiosidad y me encantaba la sensación de hacer algo real. ## La Búsqueda de la Libertad

A medida que crecí, me di cuenta de que no quería seguir el camino tradicional. La idea de trabajar en una oficina corporativa, con horarios fijos y proyectos que no me emocionaran, no me atraía para nada.
